7 Tips for Better Leadership |
|

|
The final weeks of June, 2010 will go down in Australia as the history making moment in which a Prime Minster was removed from office by his party, without serving his first term as leader. Just 24 hours later, further history was made as we witnessed our first female Prime Minister being sworn in to lead Australia.
One of the great industry management buzzwords these days is also leadership. Today, given the leadership responsibilities, it is very easy to swap the title of Program Manager for Brand Manager. If we were working for a large corporate company like Coca Cola, Qantas, General Motors Holden or Coles the equivalent leadership roles and responsibilities carried out by a Program Manager are readily aligned to those of a Brand Manager. Of course leadership is also critical to a brand's success. Surprisingly, some people believe that the same qualities that define a good leader also define a good manager.
There is quite a difference between being a good leader and a good manager.
Leadership is about communicating, motivating, encouraging and involving people. A good manager possess the qualities of planning, organising, directing and developing a business In my business life and consulting experience, I can think of people who have been great mentors and leaders for me, and others who have been great managers as well.
However, I could count on one hand inspiring people who I've worked alongside who have the combined attributes of both strong leadership and management skills. They have been the sort of people who make you want to get up and go to work for them every day. As one of my clients reminds me when we're identifying future leaders to grow within their business " what we need are leaders who if you ever had to go into armed battle, you'd feel very comfortable with them guiding and taking care of you." A little dramatic maybe, but the sentiment is understood.
Does a good leader also have be a good manager? In short, yes! Strong leaders need to do both lead and manage. Two points to keep in mind though,
The way we need to lead will vary in different markets and situations. Many things set the scene for the type of leader required, including market size, competitive situation, staff skill sets and so on. Leaders need to manage but not all managers are good leaders. Often we need to upgrade our skill development to ensure we have a balance of both leadership and management attributes. As we reflect on the leadership styles successful businesses will require into the near future, successful leaders will understand that leadership styles also need to change to keep up with the evolving needs of creating an enduring brand. Those who recognise it will create history for themselves .... for all the right reasons.
